「百万遍」おもしろい響き。この名は交差点の北東に位置する「百万遍知恩寺」に由来する。後醍醐天皇の時代、元弘元年（1331年）に疫病が大流行。知恩寺の八世善阿空円上人が百万遍念仏を唱えたところ疫病が収まった。それに感じた後醍醐天皇から「百万遍」という寺号を賜ったと伝えられている。
東大路通りと今出川通りの交差点が「百万遍」だが、周辺の地域もばくっと百万遍と呼ばれる。正式な地名ではないので、どこからどこまでを指すのかは定かではない。
「百万遍おこしやす」という気持ちを込めて「百万遍cross」という名前にしたが、ゲストさんが迷子になった時も「百万編」と言えばだいじょうぶ。、京都の人は誰でも知っているから。
